An artwork release, and the reason it's a whole number. The player had been drawing a second copy of the album cover behind the first — scaled up and heavily blurred — and dissolving the real cover halfway down the screen so the two could meet without a visible seam. That is why the whole player read as out of focus, and why the subject of a photograph was so often eaten by the fade. Both layers are gone. Albums that ship a portrait or animated cover now fill the screen with it, cropped to where the picture genuinely ends rather than to the empty space some posters carry underneath; everything else gets the cover as a card resting on the album's own colours, which is what a square sleeve wants to be. The cover also breathes now — it eases smaller when you pause and springs back when you play. Separately, covers stopped being the wrong album: higher-resolution artwork was found by searching the artist and album as plain text and accepting the first result, verifying only that the artist looked about right, which is precisely the case a wrong answer passes — Belle and Sebastian's "Books" came back with the sleeve for "If You're Feeling Sinister", and of fifteen albums checked, nine resolved to the wrong record. Matches are now confirmed against the album too, and an unconfirmed one keeps the original cover instead of guessing. Colour follows the same rule: it is read from the picture on screen rather than from the square sleeve, so an animated cover no longer tints the screen with a different photograph's palette, and a sleeve that is a small poster on a wide cream border is read from the poster rather than washing out to grey. Album pages could also show a different edition's cover entirely, because a barcode is not unique at Apple and we took whichever edition was listed first — that now picks the edition you're actually looking at. Finally, the mini player can be opened by VoiceOver, which it could not before.
