An audio release — three things people said sounded wrong, and all three were real. Bass-heavy songs distorted with the EQ on: the EQ's bands are wide enough to overlap, so Bass Boost's “+7dB” was really producing about +13dB, and everything past the ceiling was being chopped flat rather than turned down — that's a clipper, and on a track where the sub-bass carries the waveform it's the crackle you were hearing. The EQ now measures every block of audio it's about to play and backs off by however much it's actually over, so a boosted preset stays a boost. Volume levelling was only ever turning songs down, so a loud modern master came down to meet a quiet older one while the quiet one stayed put and the difference between them survived; it now works in both directions. It was also only running while the visualiser was on screen — so for anyone who never opened it, the feature did nothing at all — and it was measuring raw energy rather than perceived loudness, which reads bass-heavy mixes as louder than they sound. It now measures the way ears do, on every song, whether or not anything is on screen. And songs stopped jumping to the next track about three quarters of the way through, or restarting there with repeat on. The app looks for a fade-out so it can mix out of the last real note instead of into silence, but it was reading that from whatever audio had reached the phone, and a download that stopped early looks identical to a song that goes quiet early. It won't call something a fade-out now unless it has heard the whole song, it won't accept more than 20 seconds as a tail, and it no longer shares that reading with everyone else — so one interrupted download can't skip songs on other people's phones.
