Sing finally sounds like karaoke. Until now it worked by cancelling whatever sits in the centre of the mix, which is where the lead vocal lives — but so do the kick, the snare and the bass, so the song came out thin, and on an older or narrower mix the voice barely moved at all. Songs that have been through our vocal separation now play a properly separated backing track instead. Measured against the original it removes about 9dB from the range a lead vocal occupies while leaving the bass within 2dB of where it started, and unlike the old method it works on mono and on wide mixes, both of which used to defeat it. The fader still does what it did: push it most of the way up and the voice is gone, ease it back and the singer sits quietly underneath so you can follow the next line. Those are two different jobs and they're now done two different ways — the separated track for “gone”, the original for “quiet” — with the app moving between them as you drag, and never running both at once. An HD badge appears above the fader when the song you're on has a separated backing track, because not every song does yet and the two are different enough to hear.
